How hearing loss works
Why you can hear people
but miss words
In age-related hearing loss, the most common kind, high-pitched sounds fade first. Consonants like s, f, th and k are high and soft, while vowels are lower and louder. So speech can sound loud enough but still unclear.
Example hearing test result
The red line is the quietest sound the right ear can hear at each pitch. Anything above the line is missed. Hover or tap a letter to see an example word.
6
of 22 speech sounds are too quiet to hear without help.

Hannah explained my results slowly and didn’t rush me. I tried two pairs before choosing, and nobody pushed me either way.

The ringing hasn’t gone, and they never said it would. But I have a plan now, and most days it bothers me less.
